À la folie!
Cuturi Gallery London, Cromwell Place (2022)
A whimsical universe of sculptural furniture and storytelling objects that invite you back to childhood memories and fantasy.
In À la folie! at Cuturi Gallery, presented at Cromwell Place, Hubert Le Gall brought together over twenty works created between 2012 and 2022, including some of his most iconic sculptures, cabinets, and mirrors. The exhibition unfolded as an eccentric yet playful collection that invited viewers into a dreamlike universe shaped by storytelling, where objects existed between sculpture and design.
Resisting categorisation, Le Gall moved fluidly between the roles of sculptor, designer, and storyteller, drawing inspiration from seventeenth- and eighteenth-century furniture, Pop Art, Surrealism, Japanese culture, and Greek mythology. Pieces such as The Pinocchio Floor Lamp (2014) and The Pinocchio Cabinet (2018) echoed his oft-cited reflection that he was as much Geppetto as Pinocchio — maker and dreamer at once.
Highlights included L’Éternel Printemps (2018) and The Pasiphaé (2022), which exemplified his fascination with myth and reinterpretation through monumental sculptural forms and a deep love for craftsmanship and noble materials.
